Baler... Simply Beautiful

The serene side of Sabang Beach in Baler when the big waves are still "in their sleep".

If award winning Hollywood Director Francis Ford Coppola wasn’t able to resist Baler, Aurora’s  simple beauty and Spartan charm and even immortalized Baler in his critically acclaimed movie “Apocalypse Now”,  well then, there has got to be more to Baler than meets the eye.  The Legendary Director behind such movie greats “Godfather” “American Graffiti”, “Apocalypse Now” to name a few is known to have an eye for fascinating sceneries and an acute sense of taste for authenticity (apparently during that time it was still impossible to shoot in Vietnam as the film was about the Vietnam War) shot scenes in Baler even though his mentor Roger Corman vehemently advised him not to. Coppola was drawn to Baler and started filming and even appeared as TV news director in the film and the rest as they say is history.

Beauty versus Beauties… Baler was able to enthrall Mutya ng Pilipinas candidates of 2009.  Baler is blessed with natural attractions like the millennium old Balete Tree, pristine waterfalls and beaches, Sabang beach that seem to stretch from one end of the horizon to the other with dancing waves that differs in height with the change of the season. Also, Cemento Beach & Reef, Charlie’s point and the coral-rich islands of Dimadimalangat, Aniao and Lukso-Lukso lie just off the coast, Lamao Caves, Ditumabo Falls, Dilasag Coast, Digisit Beach, Dicasalarin Bay, Dibut Bay, and a galore more.  Other attractions would be President Manuel L. Quezon’s abode, Museo de Baler, the historically famous Baler Church, Ermita Hill with its hillside vantage offering a fantastic view of Baler, etc. It’s no surprise to know how the Mutya beauties raved about the beauty that is Baler in their essays and interviews and specially how the warmth of the people have won them over.

Sabang Beach is located just a few minutes from Baler town proper.  Sabang Beach is the popular choice and known to be one of the best surfing spots not only in the Philippines but in the world. Sabang Beach hosts the annual International Aurora Surfing Cup. That is why our foreigner friends and our own weekend warriors and surf enthusiasts from all-over frequent Sabang Beach in Baler and continues to have a growing number of visitors.  Aside from surfing, it's a good place to relax, bathe in the sun, play with the waves, take photos, and with every adventure it won’t be a complete salvo without eating meals with friends and family with as much gusto as their fun-filled day marking a moment and celebrating by sharing graces with a picnic on the beach or on the back of their transportation. This would be a typical day in Sabang Beach. It would appear like the sun the sky, the clouds, the water are having a field day for the rest of us to enjoy.

Baler is the capital and oldest municipality of Aurora Province. Baler is the seat of government, the center for trade and industry and the most progressive town in Aurora. Baler commands the most resorts, public institutions and facilities, as well as business establishments. It is the regions gate to economic growth with its strategic trade routes and geared to be the next special economic zone. A house bill authored by Representative Juan Edgardo Angara currently at the House of Representatives will create a Special Economic Zone for the province of Aurora leading the endeavor to promulgate steady flow of investments from local entities and international enterprises to Aurora. It is a massive project to develop a new coastal city in the province involving the construction of an airport, seaport, resorts, residential, industrial and commercial areas. New roads are underway; it is easier and more accessible to travel to Baler nowadays as the roads are not paved with asphalt but cemented so the ride to Baler is smoother, faster and safer. Not to fail to mention electricity, water and communications are steady infrastructures.  Baler is gaining momentum in all aspects and with a lot of growing room, progress is inevitable.

With all these said, what is it about Baler that draws and keeps people (like Coppola, the Mutya’s , surfers, investors, foreigners, travel enthusiasts, weekend warriors, food-trippers) to come back for more? It may be the sun, the surf, the sand, nature’s bounty, the rustic charm, the all-Filipino hospitality, the promising business prospects and pioneering branches, and the allure of being the next best destination?  It may be all of these things rolled into one. Coppola took a leap and made his mark in Hollywood taking a chance on Baler…are you ready to take a leap? Are you ready to make your mark in Baler?
