The Jeepney… A Sweet and Historic Filipino Ride

A variation of the jeepney horse art deco with the horse resembling the fabled Pegasus

If Ferrari has the prancing horse as its mark of luxury and exclusivity and Lamborghini has the Spanish fighting bull as its symbol of strength and power , in the Philippines the “work horse” is the exclusive art deco on the hoods (and sometimes on side  bumpers and tail lights, yes the horses come in herds) of the country’s king of the road – the Jeepney.

How it all started
The Jeepney, the undisputed public utility transport in the Philippines, is a product of Filipino ingenuity back in the mid 1940’s when the American GIs left their military jeeps after the world war. It started with only 4 passengers but over the decades, the jeep has transformed and has stretched dramatically to accommodate 22 passengers. Like the iconic Tuktuk of Thailand, the Jeepney is a must try for tourists visiting the country for the first time.

The "classic look" of a typical jeepney horse art deco

The Work Horse Art Deco - Popularity Boom and Decline
Sarao Motors, one of the first manufacturers of jeepneys, started putting metal horses on the hood of the jeepney as a symbol of speed and hard work. Over the years, the horses have increased in number on jeepney hoods like a miniature Marlboro commercial especially in the  70’s and 80’s, however, they have decreased in the 90’s and saw the decline in its presence in the 2000’s. Today, it’s a rarity to see these metallic creatures with the jeepneys adopting  sleeker designs opting the art deco out.

They are still out there… Horse-spotting
If you are keen on spotting these horses, you will see that they are not yet extinct. There are some jeepney owners who still like the nostalgia of those little shiny figurines vibrate when the engine is revved up.

If you have the option to choose a jeepney to ride, hail one that still has “horses” on the hood.  It’s your connection to the grand past of the jeepney and the golden years of the art deco work horses.

Shopping in Manila… Dapitan Arcade/Tiangge (Export Wares for the Smart and Thrifty)

Beautiful wind chimes made of capiz shells adorn the many stalls in Dapitan Arcade
The rich, the famous, the design savvy and even the penny pinchers march on to Dapitan Arcade in Manila.  At the cross of Dapitan and Kanlaon streets in Manila, anyone willing to spend P20 for a good find or hundreds to the thousands for great finds will absolutely have a field day at Dapitan Arcade and Dapitan Tiangge.

My younger years have been all about driving my mom and dad around, to near and far trips for such great bargains and Dapitan and Kanlaon streets were part of those hot and humid adventures with them.  Dapitan as well as the neighboring streets have been a depot for crafts and wares varying from rattan, wrought iron, ceramics (plates, pots, vases and other vessels), capiz, wood, metals, home garden decorations, kitchen/ living area/ bedroom furnishings and the lot. The local craft wares sold here are export over-runs and local surplus that line-up the streets creating a very stimulating arena.  The colors will surely get your attention and the products will win you over one way or another because of their quality or the deal. Designs are varied from traditional, classic, modern, and eclectic to the bizarre.

A mall rat will not rave about Dapitan conditions.  There is no air-conditioning. Since most of the products are on the streets, expect the sun to give you a good fry or be drenched by rain, expect gutter utters, the occasional volatile spit, and the far from flowery air but aside from these you’ll never know it might just create a patron of you yet. It is a bargain the whole year round; the products vary with the seasons and market trends yet also maintain the popular basics. There is a more vibrant feel on the “ber” months when everything on the street just screams “buy me”!!!  Well, just barely 2 weeks ago, I made a mistake of asking how much a shabby chic over hang coat rack which later on I learned was a cabinet that belonged to the stall owners’ neighbor outback just drying the overhangs new coat of paint by the roadside.  Oi!!!

To the holiday shoppers it’s not too late to buy your holiday decorations ranging from Parols, Christmas trees, lights, stuffed toys, Christmas tree balls, the list is endless. Yes that is how interesting this place is and how everything is in organized chaos, cluttered to the ceilings fun.  You have to be more patient than usual in walking the aisles and get ready to rub elbows (and that’s not the worst of it) with EVERYBODY.

Pathfinder and I had a super fun adventure in Dapitan. We never planned on getting anything, we are more often content to just visit and take pictures but this time we took back with us new additions to our home.  Although the conditions here are not as friendly for the elderly and those with handicaps and can sometimes be rough and tough, all in all this place is Disneyland for many even holy land for some.

It's a great place to comb for fascinating gifts, wonderful ideas for the home and best of all the superb deals that’s close to a steal.  To come home with a big smile knowing you have bought something for a fraction of its mall counterpart is a reward in itself and makes it worth the trip.

It would be a great idea to stop by on your long weekends. Shopping hours are from 7AM - 7PM. For Inquiries call the Dapitan Arcade Administrator at 02-411-0252.

Baler... Simply Beautiful

The serene side of Sabang Beach in Baler when the big waves are still "in their sleep".

If award winning Hollywood Director Francis Ford Coppola wasn’t able to resist Baler, Aurora’s  simple beauty and Spartan charm and even immortalized Baler in his critically acclaimed movie “Apocalypse Now”,  well then, there has got to be more to Baler than meets the eye.  The Legendary Director behind such movie greats “Godfather” “American Graffiti”, “Apocalypse Now” to name a few is known to have an eye for fascinating sceneries and an acute sense of taste for authenticity (apparently during that time it was still impossible to shoot in Vietnam as the film was about the Vietnam War) shot scenes in Baler even though his mentor Roger Corman vehemently advised him not to. Coppola was drawn to Baler and started filming and even appeared as TV news director in the film and the rest as they say is history.

Beauty versus Beauties… Baler was able to enthrall Mutya ng Pilipinas candidates of 2009.  Baler is blessed with natural attractions like the millennium old Balete Tree, pristine waterfalls and beaches, Sabang beach that seem to stretch from one end of the horizon to the other with dancing waves that differs in height with the change of the season. Also, Cemento Beach & Reef, Charlie’s point and the coral-rich islands of Dimadimalangat, Aniao and Lukso-Lukso lie just off the coast, Lamao Caves, Ditumabo Falls, Dilasag Coast, Digisit Beach, Dicasalarin Bay, Dibut Bay, and a galore more.  Other attractions would be President Manuel L. Quezon’s abode, Museo de Baler, the historically famous Baler Church, Ermita Hill with its hillside vantage offering a fantastic view of Baler, etc. It’s no surprise to know how the Mutya beauties raved about the beauty that is Baler in their essays and interviews and specially how the warmth of the people have won them over.

Sabang Beach is located just a few minutes from Baler town proper.  Sabang Beach is the popular choice and known to be one of the best surfing spots not only in the Philippines but in the world. Sabang Beach hosts the annual International Aurora Surfing Cup. That is why our foreigner friends and our own weekend warriors and surf enthusiasts from all-over frequent Sabang Beach in Baler and continues to have a growing number of visitors.  Aside from surfing, it's a good place to relax, bathe in the sun, play with the waves, take photos, and with every adventure it won’t be a complete salvo without eating meals with friends and family with as much gusto as their fun-filled day marking a moment and celebrating by sharing graces with a picnic on the beach or on the back of their transportation. This would be a typical day in Sabang Beach. It would appear like the sun the sky, the clouds, the water are having a field day for the rest of us to enjoy.

Baler is the capital and oldest municipality of Aurora Province. Baler is the seat of government, the center for trade and industry and the most progressive town in Aurora. Baler commands the most resorts, public institutions and facilities, as well as business establishments. It is the regions gate to economic growth with its strategic trade routes and geared to be the next special economic zone. A house bill authored by Representative Juan Edgardo Angara currently at the House of Representatives will create a Special Economic Zone for the province of Aurora leading the endeavor to promulgate steady flow of investments from local entities and international enterprises to Aurora. It is a massive project to develop a new coastal city in the province involving the construction of an airport, seaport, resorts, residential, industrial and commercial areas. New roads are underway; it is easier and more accessible to travel to Baler nowadays as the roads are not paved with asphalt but cemented so the ride to Baler is smoother, faster and safer. Not to fail to mention electricity, water and communications are steady infrastructures.  Baler is gaining momentum in all aspects and with a lot of growing room, progress is inevitable.

With all these said, what is it about Baler that draws and keeps people (like Coppola, the Mutya’s , surfers, investors, foreigners, travel enthusiasts, weekend warriors, food-trippers) to come back for more? It may be the sun, the surf, the sand, nature’s bounty, the rustic charm, the all-Filipino hospitality, the promising business prospects and pioneering branches, and the allure of being the next best destination?  It may be all of these things rolled into one. Coppola took a leap and made his mark in Hollywood taking a chance on Baler…are you ready to take a leap? Are you ready to make your mark in Baler?

Vigan, Ilocos Sur - The Living Museum

Along the western coast of northern Luzon in the Philippines the living museum that is Ilocos Sur (South) displays the strong presence of its past.

I stood in wonder as the theater of time with aged lamp posts, cobble stoned streets, horse carriages, and ancestral buildings in varying Spanish-Mexican-Chinese architectural designs for background unfolded the drama of its rich history, heritage and culture.

It was a unique experience hosted by a seasoned province that seemed to be trapped in a pocket of a time gone by. If one of your wishes is to be transported back to a glorious era, Ilocos Sur will be more than happy to walk you through it.

The Highlights of Ilocos Sur

VIVA VIGAN! (Capital city of Ilocos Sur) – UNESCO World Heritage Site
For a very old settlement, thriving long before it was even established in the 16th century, I found Vigan to be vivacious. Vigan is the country’s only city to be inscribed in 1999 on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.  The inscription is justified by UNESCO as “representation of a unique fusion of Asian building design and construction with European colonial architecture and planning. Vigan is an exceptionally intact and well preserved example of a European trading town in East and South-East Asia.” Vigan has a strong European ambience due to the centuries of being under the Spanish rule. Mexican architecture and other ancient foreign influences like the Japanese, Chinese, and Malay are also found throughout the city in perfect compromise with the new age.

St. Paul’s Cathedral or Vigan Cathedral

Originally a chapel of wood and thatch was built in 1574 by order of Spanish conquistador and founder Juan de Salcedo, but later on after a few reconstructions by order and by necessity the cathedral’s cornerstone was laid in the beginning of 1790 by the Augustinians.

A landmark built to enthrall with its design as well as to (with the ingenious modifications of the Ilocanos the natives of this province) withstand earthquakes. Fu (Lion) dogs guarding the outermost doors suggest that the strong Chinese influence remain. At a distance of 10 meters south of the cathedral its belfry stands 25 meters high.

Bantay Church and Bell Tower

Built in 1590, Bantay Church features a neo-gothic facade incorporating the distinct Vigan earthquake baroque in its architecture built to withstand the magnitudes of this destructive natural force.

“Bantay” (meaning to keep watch or lookout) this bell tower sits on a hill witness to everything for its panoramic view of Ilocos Sur. It played its part in history when it served as watch tower, part of the city’s defense to help alert against potential threats and enemies.

Sta. Maria Church
This centuries old church was used as a fortress at the height of Philippine Revolution in 1896 against the Spaniards and again during World War II.  It is a national landmark and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.  A massive structure having 2 huge columns that flank the facade, adding to its grandeur are 82 steps to reach the church and brickwork flaunting a warm red exterior.

Plaza Burgos and Plaza Salcedo
Named after a martyr-priest and Spanish conquistador-founder respectively the 2 Plazas are center to all the action and gatherings of different types.  Nearby are food stalls galore selling an assortment of native delicacies and horse drawn carriages lined by the hundreds.

Calle Crisologo
The most famous street in Vigan for its old world feel where every step forward is a step back in time. Replete with Spanish style houses with ancient tile roofs, massive hardwood floors, banisters and railings that evoke the former era when its people lived prosperously due to the Manila-Acapulco maritime trade.  Calle Crisologo also showcase the varying Spanish-Mexican-Chinese architectural styles imbibed in the culture. Souvenir shops line the streets and Filipino hospitality at its best this street is a blast from the past.

Other Worthy Attractions in Ilocos Sur
Visit the Burgos National Museum and Crisologo Museum for some interesting memorabilia, Ilocano artifacts and ethnic arts. Go hands-on pottery making at “Paburnayan” or Pottery Factories. Baluarte is a must-see petting zoo from ducks to ostriches, pint-sized horses, camels and tigers.   The best way to see the sights in Ilocos Sur especially Vigan is to ride the horse-drawn carriages which could be hired for $4 USD per hour.

July-September Philippine Events and Holidays

Have you started scheduling your next local vacation? With only 15 paid days off (plus or minus for some), you really need to make a lot of thinking to ensure that those days are not wasted just lying in bed or staying at home watching TV series marathons. If you’re quite the explorer like me, this list of events and holidays all around the Philippines is worth a second look and maybe carving out a couple of days from your precious VL credits.

2012 is an exciting year for local tourism with the Department of Tourism getting all the help it can get from everyone who are into social media to advertise the campaign “It’s Fun in the Philippines”.  By the looks of it, Filipinos who have at least one Facebook account have responded to DOT’s plea and now making their own take on broadcasting the latest battle cry in marketing  Philippine tourism.

WOW Philippines and its success formula may have been shelved for good. Now, the promise of the latest slogan will greatly depend on how Filipinos loudly and creatively sell the idea to the world that it’s indeed more “Fun in the Philippines.”
It’s time to take part in this campaign. Go through the list, get excited and boost Philippine tourism by taking  that V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N!
