Calamian Isles… Heaven on Earth (Coron and Busuanga, Palawan) Part 4 of 7

Romantic Interlude at Lambingan Bridge

My eyes were drawn by the flight of birds just gliding on the gentle wind not so far ahead.  I knew it heralded a school of fish or something else they fancied.  To reach them I had to get to the other side of the houses that stood there on stilts. Lambingan Bridge is a gangplank of graffiti that alluded to trysts. It was the perfect rendezvous spot for groupies, family siesta and most especially young lovers on a stroll.

The bridge with its seasoned lamp posts, the flock of birds and the beautiful scenery were like hints from a romantic novel.  At the end of the bridge meters away from everything was a platform with worn out wooden benches that only added to its appeal.  I couldn’t resist but to sit there for a while and linger with my thoughts as the sea breeze cooed and the bridge itself wooed me true to its name.

Enough Mush and on with the Push at Mt. Tapyas
It was a scorching day and I just had to buy refreshment from the nearby store.  A Manileña turned local ran the store and asked me if I’d already been to Mt.Tapyas and if I was up for a climb under the scornful heat. She casually advised me to bring some water because I will be at some point needing it and smiled mischievously.  Although somewhat clueless, I was ready for another adventure.

I went up a hill behind her store leading up to Mt. Tapyas.  I saw stairs leading up to an iron cross larger than life that stood in commanding presence on top of the mountain, “How hard could it be?”,  I spoke too soon.   Just to give you an idea, it was almost like taking a trip to Corcovado Mountain in Brazil to scale to the top to see Cristo Redentor, the 125 ft statue of Jesus after 222 steps to the summit, almost similar to ascending the 272 steps of Batu caves in Malaysia. This by far was most brutal.  A punishing pilgrimage of more or less 800 steps that made me real sorry for my earthly sins.  My calf muscles soar, soaked in sweat, PG rated words left my mouth as I realized I didn’t bring legs of steel.  Depending on one’s fitness the climb could take 40 minutes to half-a day.  Some don’t even push through and stay at the 1st view deck in the shade.  I took the challenge and mustered on.  I didn’t hurry and relished in my self-consoling minutes on every view deck at various points.  I don’t know if it was because of the pain, the thought of consequent triumph, the marvelous sight I know was just waiting, perhaps all of the above, but the last flight of stairs almost made me want to cry.

As I planted my last step, it elicited my memory and mimicry of Rocky Balboa when I ran up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  In my head, the theme song from the movie “Gonna Fly Now” played as I rose victorious to the challenge. It was exhilarating to finally have the full view of the Mt. Tapyas Cross the iconic monument that can be seen even from the neighboring islands.

The magnificent limestone cliffs and the clear emerald waters to the deep blue, birds eye view of Coron Bay and the 360 as far as my eyes could see made it all worthwhile.

I salute all those who have reached Mt.Tapyas’ summit. Now I know what that mischievous smile by the lady at the store was all about.
